Trip to Cameroon December 2009-January 2010
Dear Marcelle:
I had the intention of sending you a note for a while, but finally I am doing it!
WE would like to thank you for the interesting trip you proposed and the excelent way in which it
worked out.
First of all we would like to mention that our guide Carolyn was a good as any guide we have found
in our many trips, she certainly is among the best. Very professional and acomodating to the wishes
of her tour members, and her lenguage skills are outstanding. We cerainly had a very good overview
of the varios climate zones and ethnic groups of Cameroon and the various cheferies that were
included in the itinerary. The accomodations very always the best available and very adequate. We
particulary enjoyed our New Years Eve dinner at Porte Mayo in Maroua, and our stays in Zwinkels Camp
and Zwinkels villa in Bamenda and with the lady from Holland and her charming husband.
You had warned us about the infrastructure, and certainly some of the roads in Cameroon never have
seen a grader. Fortunately the two drivers we had in our trip were excellent, very resposable
drivers, no speeding.
Our only complains, and they certainly have nothing to do with your travel agency are the services
the official guide operation in Buea provides. We were very surprised from the beginning that the
guide would not select the food for the treck, the lady in charge of the operation made a list of
the needs, asked us if we wanted to go to the market, we decided they could go and buy it. It
certainly was an incredible amount of food, we say them packing it, with out any special
consideration about how perishable it was, they packed papayas at the botton of the pack and served
pre fried chicken and fish from Bouea for four days in tropical weather. There estimate of required
water, left also much to be desired as well as there estimate of the distances between camps. There
never was a stop for lunch. The campgrounds were disgustingly dirty. I think that may be tour
operators could promote the development of more professional trecking services in the Mt. Cameroon
area. In Kyrgystan we had a guide, a cook and a porter they were outstandingly professional, the
food was balanced, they had selected it, we always stoped for lunch.
On the positive site the guide for the Mt. Oku climb was very knowledgable and professional.
We want to thank you and Carolyn for the trip. She told us that you are planing to offer tours to
some of the surrounding areas. You have our e-mail adresses and pease keep us informed, we
certainly are considering other trips to Africa, Madagascar came upn the radar screen recently, they
even have cancelled visas por EU pass holders. May be Cameroon should consider that too.
Regards
Victor Gerez
